WC Henderson advances to District 1 title match with comeback win over Pennsbury – PA Prep Live

WEST CHESTER >> On Tuesday afternoon in the semi-final of the District 1 6A tournament, West Chester host Henderson Warriors found themselves in an unfamiliar position. The top-seeded Warriors lost three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to a pitcher who looked very strong.
Well the Warriors came all the way back and Eddie Smink ended things in the bottom of the seventh inning with an RBI single with the bases loaded for a 4-3 win to send the Warriors to the District 1 6A Championship Game of Thursday against Owen J. Roberts at Villanova Ballpark in Plymouth Township at 4 p.m.
West Chester Henderson (22-1) chipped Pennsbury starter Justin Mitrovich, scoring two runs late in the fourth inning and one in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game at 3-3 ahead of the Warriors, fueled by a simple start from Kevin Wheeler, did their magic in the seventh inning.
“I was just trying to put the ball in play in that situation,” Wheeler said. “We were down, which we haven’t been too often this season, but we didn’t panic because we know we can throw and play defense, so all we had to do was get some hits. It’s really great to go to the district tileset. It was one of our pre-season goals.
Pennsbury (19-4) hit Warriors starter Jackson Snyder in the top of the fourth inning with a 0-0 draw. Ryan Zuckerman took a Snyder fastball in the opposite direction for a high, long home run over the right field fence for a 1-0 lead over the Falcons.
Mitrovich then walked and after Joe Tiroly doubled up, the Falcons had men at second and third with no one. Reese Hirsh tore up an RBI brace to make it 2-0 in favor of the Falcons. Jackson Freeman walked, then Evan Travigine ran aground at shortstop where Smink fielded the ball and downed a Pennsbury runner at home plate for the Falcons’ first out.
James Schaefer then walked with the bases loaded to force a run and the Falcons had a 3-0 lead. Snyder brought out Pennsbury’s next two batters to limit the damage.
The Warriors came right back as Dean O’Neill led fourth Henderson with a single and went second on a pitch to Smink who was in the dirt. Smink ripped an RBI single to left field to make it 3-1. Dylan Grim followed with a single to center field and Brett McCartney beat the runners, putting the Warriors in second and third with one out.
Ethan Ginagiulio hit a short grounder and when Grim was caught between second and third, Smink took off for home and slid across the plate for the Warriors’ second run and it was a 3-2 lead for Pennsbury.
The Warriors tied things up late in the fifth inning when O’Neill ripped an RBI single to score Wheeler, who had three hits for the game, and the Warriors were tied 3-3. Eric Lintelman came in to throw in relief from Snyder to start the top of the sixth inning.
“This team is really competitive,” said West Chester Henderson coach Luke McNichol. “They go all 21 out and until they go 21 out they compete and think they have a chance to win the game. And I went to Lintleman because Snyder was done for the day. He really gutted it for us, but he was gone. He gave us everything he had. »
Lintelman struck out all six batters he faced, including two strikeouts. The Falcons went three straight against Smink at shortstop in the top of the seventh inning, setting up the heroics for the Warriors.
Wheeler opened with a single against Pennsbury reliever Kayden Faulcoun. Then Lintelman beat a bunt along the third base line to put the men up first and second with no outs. O’Neill was then intentionally loaded with the bases and Smink sent the Warriors to the championship game with a sharp right single and the Warriors secured a thrilling 4-3 win.
“I’ve come in these situations all season,” Lintelman said. “My fastball was really good today and I only threw the fastball and my curve. Getting to the district title game is a great feeling, but our job is not done yet. We have more to do.
