Does Afriyie Akoto know Ghana’s agricultural value chain?

Minister of Agriculture, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto

A former research scientist from the Savannah Agricultural Research Institute (SARI) of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Professor Roger Kanton, wondered if the Minister of Food and Agriculture , Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto was well versed in the agricultural value chain. in the country.

He also questioned whether the minister had deviated from his mandate and now ventured into transporting, marketing and distributing food to Ghanaians.

His comment comes the day after the sale of foodstuffs at the premises of the Ministry of Agriculture on Friday, November 11, 2022.

According to him, the transport of goods from farmers to farms was the responsibility of the buffer stock of Ghana and not the Ministry of Agriculture.

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on November 10, 2022, Prof Kanton said: ‘I want you to ask him, is this the mandate of the Department of Food and Agriculture? Will there now be a constitutional change in its mandate, to move now to transport, marketing and food distribution.

He added that “does he have the capacity, bringing food from rural areas to urban centers, to ask the minister if he knows and knows the agricultural value chain. The agricultural value chain has many players or actors, so you cannot leave your chain and act on someone’s chain.

“There is a whole organization that is in charge of taking the excess food out of the farmers and that is the buffer stock, my question is how well did they work. They keep saying there is enough food so they should deploy people from the buffer stock, why are they using their meager resources as a technical ministry to wade into an area they don’t have the expertise in… I find that to be a little a little weird,” he pointed out.

The Ministry of Food and Agriculture on Friday, November 11, 2022 commenced the sale of foodstuffs to Ghanaians.

According to the ministry, the decision was to sell food directly from farmers in rural areas to people in urban areas at a much cheaper rate.
